One of the best businesses you can start from home is to sell your expertise as a consultant. In fact, consulting is one of the hottest trends in the market today, as more and more people appreciate the independence and flexibility it brings and the range of potential income that this business can generate.

Professionals, dissatisfied with the corporate environment find consulting to be a rewarding alternative. 1. Choose your legal structure. It is best to formalize your business structure right from the start, both for legal and tax considerations. The three most common forms of business are sole proprietorship, partnership and corporations. Many self-employed consultants prefer to set-up their business as sole proprietorship, which is the easiest business form to set-up. However, you may be susceptible to legal liabilities since any liabilities incurred by your business become personal liability.

2. Prepare your business plan. Like any other business, it is important that you prepare your own business plan. Even though you will not present the plan to potential investors, the business plan can help you think through your strategies for keeping the business afloat and profitable, marketing and getting your expertise known to your customers, organizing your business, and generating and managing your finances. There is a number of books and business plan software in the market that could help you prepare your business plan.

3. Create your home office. If you are starting this business on a shoestring budget, you can start-out by working from your home. This is particularly important if you are embarking on this business on a part-time basis. You can work from a spare room, a garage or loft converted into an office, or even a small corner tucked in the hallway. The design of your office will largely depend on various factors: (a) the kind of consulting field you are in (e.g. an interior designer may need a bigger space than a an online marketing consultant); (b) the equipment and supplies that you need; and (c) whether you expect to entertain and meet with clients in your home. Marketing Your Consulting Business

Once you've set up your consulting business, the next step is to let people know that you are available for work. You must now find someone willing and able to pay you for your expert advice.

Your marketing should focus on packaging you as an expert in your field and highlighting the value-added that you could provide your clients. You must let people know that you are a professional with the expertise they need - you can help the clients solve their problems, supplement their staff, act as a catalyst, teach their organization, create new business or influence other people.

Some of the most effective ways of increasing awareness about your consulting business and finding your customers include:

1. Networking. Interacting with players in your targeted industry is one of the most, if not the most, effective way of marketing your consulting business. Simply put, the more contacts you have, the greater your chances of getting clients for your consulting business. Start with the people you already know - your former colleagues and bosses, your friends and existing industry contacts.

You should also actively participate in every networking opportunity that you can find: participation in industry organizations and events, breakfast gatherings, chamber of commerce activities, professional groups and social clubs. The more visible you are, the greater the chances that your name will be on top of the potential clients' heads when they look for a person with your expertise.

2. Referrals. A pleased and satisfied client can be a very effective marketing tool for your consulting business. Once you have completed your projects with clients, and they are extremely satisfied with your performance, make sure that you ask for referrals and recommendations! They will only be too pleased to help spread the word about how great you are and the quality of your work. Strong word of mouth from a fellow business owner is so much more effective than any kind of advertising in the world.

3. Cold Calling. It would be great if clients knock on your door all the time. Alas, that is not always the case. There will be times when you have to go out there to look for them. You may dread the idea of cold calling; but selling is an integral part of operating a business.

To succeed in cold calling, you must practice techniques for getting past the cordon sanitaires of secretaries and assistants to reach the decision-makers. Note that the top boss may not always be the decision-maker in the organization: it can be the human resource director who recommends and decides on consultants who will be hired; or the marketing personnel. The key is to research carefully the power structure of the organization, and get that appointment.

Prepare yourself thoroughly by practicing and harnessing your sales pitch and improving your closing techniques. Read books, attend training and seminars, or get a coach to help you improve your cold calling techniques.

4. Public Speaking. As a consultant, you are presenting yourself as an expert. As an expert, you need to be visible talking about your expertise. Public speaking is an excellent opportunity to present your expertise to an interested audience. If you are nervous about the idea of speaking in public, you can start small. Public libraries often arrange for events that utilize speakers. Volunteer to share your knowledge in their forums. You may also want to contact organizations and clubs in your area to offer your expertise. If you've built an impressive enough resume, you can even get an agent to look for possible speaking engagements for you.

5. Books, Articles and Newsletters. Getting published can greatly help in establishing a reputation for excellence in your field. Contact editors of both print and online publications in your field, and pitch story ideas to them. Submit regular articles, or even start a column. You can take this a step further by starting your own newsletter, or even a book. Becoming an author of a book (and if you're lucky, a best selling one at that!) can make it very easy for you to get new clients for your business.

6. Advertising. You can pick up some customers, regardless of the area of your specialization, by advertising in your area's most popular newspaper or trade and specialized business publications. Examine the editorial styles and types of advertising the publications carry, then select the single publication that most corresponds with your needs. Unless a publication reaches the people to whom you are trying to sell, don't advertise in it regardless of style, quality, or advertising rates. Avoid radio and television advertising; they are not only costly but generates the least amount of return for your advertising dollars.

7. Direct Mail advertising. Direct mail solicitation can be done through postcard, sales letter mailings or brochures. Whatever the length of your sales piece, the key is to follow the AIDA formula of copywriting: attracting the Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action on the part of the reader. You must appeal to the needs and wants of your target audience: why should they hire you and how will your services benefit them?

Starting a consulting business involves more than expertise in your field: it takes business savvy, loads of financial smarts, excellent people and communication skills, and marketing know-how to succeed. You have decided to be an entrepreneur. You want to start a business because you want be your own boss, take risks and assume total responsibility. After a careful analysis of your skills and goals in life, you know that you have it in you to become a successful business owner.

So you begin to explore your capabilities, interests and resources and decide on the kind of business. You find that there is a good market for your business, and the existing demand can sustain your operations. To help your entrepreneurial course, you prepared an excellent business plan that attracted investors for your business (well, you can always call your family and friends as investors).

You now have a business plan, funding, and you're ready to roll. But wait; there are still a number of things to be done. Here are some tasks you need to do prior to putting that "Open for Business" sign.


1. Review local business orders. You definitely do not want to start in hot legal water. Before you open your business, check your zoning ordinances. If you are starting a home business, you generally have nothing to worry about, unless you have employees wandering in and out, and generating traffic or parking problems in your neighborhood. Call your county's clerk office or local chamber of commerce to get information on the proper board or commission to contact for zoning laws. Also run a quick and thorough check for potential infringements and if anyone else is using the business name. Do this before you spend any money on advertising, business cards or stationeries, or signs.


2. Get your business cards ready. It is wise for a start-up to pay the lowest price to get the quality you need. It doesn't mean buying the cheapest. Rather, it suggests that you look for the quality that fits your business needs. If you were selling Web design services, you would want a card that projects creativity, quality and professionalism so it is best for you to pay more for your cards. However, if your business is worm farming, you could probably use the cheapest cards you can find.

3. Line up suppliers. Finding the right supplier is one of the important start-up decisions you will make for your new business. Establishing supplier relations is crucial to ensure efficient production and inventory management system, as well as smooth financial flow. Here are some tips on finding and working with the best suppliers: - Seek advice from professionals. If you're looking for computer equipment, ask a computer consultant where to get savings on software. - Split your business between suppliers. This option often brings savings to new entrepreneurs. Try to get several suppliers for your different needs. - Buy only what you need. Avoid being talked into buying extras that you do not really need. - Always ask for a professional discount. Some suppliers do offer discounts, and you wouldn't know until you ask. - Use the Internet. You can get great savings from surplus auction shops, government auctions and liquidation stores on the Internet.


4. Get furniture and equipment. As owner of a start-up venture, you do not need to spend money on designer furniture, top-of-the-line computer equipment your business does not really need, or a home office created by an expensive decorator. The goal in buying furniture and equipment is to make you and your clients feel comfortable in your place of work, allow you to save time and increase your productivity. 5. Investigate the option of leasing. The lease-versus-buy decision depends on your personal preferences - whether you are more comfortable owning or if you prefer to rent. Leasing can save you some dollars if: · You need 100 percent financing. · You live in a state with high taxes, as you do not pay sales taxes on something you lease. · You really need to protect your cash, given that a typical lease only requires a month's payment up front and no down payment. · If you expect to upgrade your equipment quickly, leasing is the way to go. · If you will be forced to depreciate your equipment, leasing allows you to write it off faster.


6. Obtain business license or permit. Without the proper permit, you can run into trouble. More so if your business begins to annoy your neighbors, particularly if your business generates too much noise or pollution, and you store materials on your yard. The need to have a business license or permit varies from state to state and from location to location. Registration is required if your business is a partnership or corporation, while some occupations require a permit or license. Typical occupations that require a license or permit in your locality include beauticians and barbers, restaurant owners, employment agencies, pawnbrokers, florists, insurance agents, among others.


7. Get requisite identification number. These include federal employer identification number, and state employer I.D. number (if applicable). For a home-based entrepreneur, you can opt to use your social security number as the federal ID number for your business. However, if you want to present a more professional image, you can get a separate employer identification number (even if you do not have employees). You will need to file Form SS-4 with the Internal Revenue Service.


8. Know federal and state tax requirements. Learning about the tax laws that will affect your business before your launching date can save you a lot of headache before the tax deadline comes. Send for the tax forms and study how what taxes you need to pay, the supporting documents you need to have, and the tax deductions you possibly avail.


9. Join a professional organization. The adage "No man is an island" applies to self-employment as it does in real life. Being part of an organization or group allows you to network, meet new contacts, expose your business, learn industry news, find a support group, or even find a mentor. For solo home business entrepreneurs, this is an important excuse to go out of the house and connect with others in your field. The money spent on joining professional organizations will be repaid in terms of better referrals, better contacts and better knowledge. Right from the very beginning, you need to plan how and what organizations you and your business could benefit from. Then sign up and be active!


10. Set a starting date. You are now ready to rock and roll! Decide whether you want to start your business with a whimper, or with pomp and pageantry. Many businesses benefit from pre-selling it to the market. You can use word of mouth, starting with your own circle of friends then to your acquaintances, and requesting them to spread the word about your new business.
